May 11-15,2008 Shaw Conference Centre Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Overview: Sustainable waste management is critical to the health and well-being of all people. As urbanization accelerates worldwide, the challenges faced in solid waste management and wastewater treatment will increase dramatically in the future. While many conferences focus on the technical aspects of waste management, this event is unique in addressing the environmental, social and economic implications. Approximately 400 decision-makers, researchers, practitioners and others from around the world are expected to attend the conference. The event follows North America’s first-ever conference on the social implications of waste, which the Centre hosted in May 2005. The 2005 conference had almost 200 delegates, and 100 researchers and practitioners from 20 countries presented their research and shared their expertise. It was rated as being a phenomenal success. Who should attend: The conference will be of interest to officials from all orders of government, urban planners, politicians, regulators, corporate officials, social scientists, biologists, engineers, students, educators, consultants and practitioners in fields ranging from technology to social marketing. Topics: Researchers and practitioners from a variety of disciplines will share ideas to provide a comprehensive view of waste management, from attitudes and perceptions to the application of market theory and international trade in waste products. Other areas include; Public Perceptions and Behaviour, Social Forces Influencing Waste Streams, Environmental Policy, Waste Management in Urban Settings, Stakeholder Participation,Developing countries and countries in transition, and Waste Economics. Submission of Abstracts: Abstracts should be no more than 200 words and must include the authors name(s), title and affiliation. All authors will present their papers at the conference. Papers will be published in the conference proceedings. Proceedings will be available on CD-Rom to all registrants at the conference. Abstracts are due by October 15, 2007.
