It is our pleasure to invite you to participate in the 4th IET International Conference on Intelligent Environments (IE 08), which will be held at the University of Washington in Seattle, USA from July 21 to July 22, 2008. As the fourth in a successful series, this conference will provide a leading edge forum for researchers and engineers from across the world to present their latest research and to discuss future directions in the area of Intelligent Environments.
The conference aims at contributing to the realization of the Ambient Intelligence vision, where physical space becomes augmented with computation, communication and digital content, thus transcending the limits of direct human perception.
Types of Intelligent Environments range from private to public and from fixed to mobile; some are ephemeral while others are permanent; some change type during their life span. The realisation of Intelligent Environments requires the convergence of different prominent disciplines: Information and Computer Science, Architecture, Material Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Sociology and Design. In addition, technical breakthroughs are required in key enabling technology fields, such as, microelectronics (e.g., miniaturisation, power consumption), communication and networking technologies (e.g., broadband and wireless networks), smart materials (e.g., bio-implants) and intelligent agents (e.g., context awareness and ontologies).
The conference will provide a forum for the presentation of research and applications and for lively discussions among researchers as well as industrialists contributing to the area on Intelligent Environments.
The conference is supported by The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), the IEEE and the IEEE Systems, Man and Cybernetics Society. The conference proceedings will be published by The IET.
We look forward to welcome you to IE 08!

Zagros Traditional Settlements
International Conference
30 April - 2 May 2008, Sanandaj, Kurdistan, Iran
CALL FOR PAPERS
The first conference on Zagros Traditional Settlements will be co-hosted by the University of Kurdistan and INTBAU (International Network for Traditional Building, Architecture & Urbanism). The main theme of the conference is the socio-spatial character of traditional settlements in the Zagros Mountains area, and will bring together scholars from the Zagros region with national and international academics with experience of researching and studying traditional settlements. The conference will take place in the city of Sanandaj, which was the historic Kurdish capital for many centuries.
Zagros is the name of mountains range shared between three countries of Iran, Iraq and Turkey. They make up Iran and Iraq's largest mountain range and define the western edge of the Iranian plateau and were recognised as the single physical phenomenon which has had a major influence in shaping Kurdish history, people, traditions, and culture.
Conference Objectives
Karaman believe that “built forms of traditional settlements spring from the physical characteristics of a site”. As the first context in which built form takes shape, there is an interface with social requirements and environment factors such as climate and the social and psychological demands of the community to achieve symbolic and expressive values over the course of time. For Rapoport, traditional built form is highly “place-specific", which means it is bound up with and determined by place, social parameters and the factor of time.
Considering these leading points, the aim of this conference is to provide a platform for discussion and sharing of information on issues and challenges related to traditional settlements with special emphasis on the socio-spatial character of traditional settlements in the Zagros Mountains area. The conference also aims at stimulating inter-disciplinary discussions and networking to further enhance and enrich the knowledge of academics, practitioners and professionals in traditional settlements.
Topics
We would welcome papers exploring a range of issues relevant to traditional settlements. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
ECOLOGICAL CHARACTER OF TRADITIONAL SETTLEMENTS
SOCIO-CULTURAL ASPECTS OF TRADITIONAL SETTLEMENTS

Papers should represent high-quality and unpublished work, not under review by any other scientific committee or journal.

Throughout the Arab region, rapid urbanization fueled by speculation and geopolitical transformations have had a significant impact on architecture. The flow of people, goods and capital into the Gulf states has prompted fundamental changes resulting from economic growth and diversification intended to lessen the dependence on oil revenues. As a result of its ability to entice investors and instantly translate funds into real estate ventures, Dubai has become a prime example and a potential focus of study. Architects and planners struggle to adapt to processes of rapid change and there seems to be little time for reflection on the long-term socio-cultural or environmental consequences of current practices.
The conference will focus on the causes and effects of emergent trends in architecture and urbanism in the Gulf. Media campaigns and journalistic accounts of the extraordinary projects that promise to increase economic vitality and attract tourists have focused attention on the region. However, there have been few attempts to move beyond the descriptive. We invite colleagues from across disciplines to develop analyses that identify, explicate and theorize emergent trends in architecture and urbanism in the Arab region in general and the Gulf states in particular. Questions to be considered include: How has economic progress affected contemporary architecture and urbanism in the Arab region? What theoretical constructs can be employed to explain transformations in the built environment? What can be learned from architecture and urbanism in fast-developing cities like Dubai? How have inhabitants adapted to the effects of urban development?
While the conference is primarily concerned with conditions in the Gulf, organizers invite contributions that address how rapid urbanization affects the production of architecture and the lives of inhabitants throughout the Arab region and beyond.
