It is a typical human instinct to resist change and the threat it poses to the status quo. When an organisation is faced with a time of change it is therefore understandable that employees and stakeholders alike will receive news of the transition with a certain amount of concern over how it will impact organisational culture and day to day operations. Your task as a communicator is to act as a change catalyst by maintaining open lines of communication and engaging relevant individuals, business units and external parties throughout the process. It is necessary to manage people and perceptions, and understand how change affects people, so that you can tailor your strategies to suit your organisation’s particular situation. To ensure that change is accepted and embraced, you need to ensure that you identify and deal with any associated barriers, and also define the processes and channels that will support the change. It is also wise to develop champions who can assist in guiding the organisation through its evolution, no matter how big or small. This two-day interactive masterclass will provide opportunities to engage with the masterclass leader and other attendees to really define how you can take a more strategic approach towards change communication. You will take part in interactive activities and discussions and leave this masterclass enthused and equipped with new strategies and ideas to implement in your workplace.

Organisations are becoming increasingly aware that information security is no longer a minor technical peripheral issue but rather is becoming a central survival issue. Threats like malware, spyware, zombies and botnets, phishing and pharming, distributed denial of service attacks, and direct internal theft are growing in prevalence and the consequences of such breaches to information security are now potentially crippling. What’s more, with the growing numbers of professional hackers, the adoption of mobile technologies, and the increasing demand for information, these threats are expected to continue to grow and evolve. Through implementing effective authentication and identification systems, firewalls, anti-spyware, anti-routers, encryption, filters and restricting access to information, organisations are able to go a long way toward securing their information however this alone is not enough and can only be successful when accompanied by a well developed, organisation wide security policy.

Classification schemes are critical tools that can simplify business processes and provide an accurate representation of an organisation’s information. Systems such as taxonomies, thesauri, metadata, ontologies and folksonomies can assist in managing information, classifying data and meeting the specific needs of user groups. A scheme that is well designed, executed and orchestrated has the potential to transform an organisation so that it’s consistently efficient, productive and viable. However, many stakeholders are confused as to the purposes, functions, and benefits associated with these schemes. Users are often intimidated by the features available, the extent of the capabilities, and the potential training and skills base required in order to use these schemes effectively. This can lead to the production of inaccurate or incomplete information that does not accurately portray the current status of the organisation, therefore negatively impacting on business functions, growth, profitability and long term potential. This conference will allow you to hear practical case studies to provide you with insights into how others have implemented, executed, managed and maintained classification schemes within their organisations. The following key areas will be addressed: Implementing an effective classification scheme that aligns with business strategy Encouraging ownership over processes and developing user confidence Exploring the search function and providing links to other systems Understanding terminology and establishing a corporate language Investigating the possibilities in integrating collaborative technologies
